If you live, work, worship or attend school in Harford County, Cecil County, Baltimore County, or Baltimore City, you already qualify for membership—and you might not even know it.

Someone learns they could have been an APG Federal Credit Union (APGFCU) member for years – enjoying competitive loan rates, fewer fees, and trusted financial guidance  – and their first reaction is: “Wait, I thought that was only for people at Aberdeen Proving Ground.”

It is one of the most common misconceptions in our region. And honestly, we understand why! Our name proudly reflects our history. But that history only tells part of our story—not the whole picture of who we are today or who we are here to serve.

Where We Come From: Honoring Our Roots

APGFCU was founded in 1938 by a small group of military and civilian workers at Aberdeen Proving Ground who believed in a simple idea: people helping people.

For decades, we served as the financial foundation for the military community that helped build this region. That bond is deep, enduring, and unchanged. We still proudly serve every service member, veteran, and APG employee who walks through our doors.

“Our name is a nod to where we started. Our doors are open to where we are now – and that’s the whole community.”

However, our legacy of service didn't stay behind a security gate. Over time, our mission grew alongside our surrounding towns. In 2003, APGFCU officially became a community-chartered credit union—a formal recognition of what was already true in spirit: our commitment extends to the entire region we call home.

Why Choose a Credit Union Over a Traditional Bank?

Credit unions like APGFCU operate differently from banks. We’re not-for-profit and member-owned, meaning every dollar we earn goes back to serving you, not shareholders. That translates directly into competitive loan rates, higher returns on savings, and lower fees.

this community

When you join a credit union, you become part of something built for members, by members. APGFCU is cooperatively owned by the people we serve, not shareholders or outside investors.

Decisions are made locally, by people who live and work in the same communities you do. That’s not a marketing line; it’s how we’re structured.

Our Name, Your Community

APG Federal Credit Union will always honor the military, veterans, and civilian workforce at Aberdeen Proving Ground who gave us our start and our purpose. Their trust built this institution. Their service shaped who we are.
