(Aberdeen, January 21, 2009) —Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union [APGFCU] hosted the inaugural workshop sponsored by the Credit Union Business Continuity Planning [CUBCP] Think Tank.
This grassroots workshop entitled Pandemic Planning, the Credit Union Way featured speakers representing the Department of Homeland Security; National Association of Federal Credit Unions; Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Preparedness Response; and, Harford County Government, Emergency Operations.
Don Lewis, APGFCU President/CEO, originally conceived the Think Tank as a natural springboard for the credit union movement to ensure the continuation of vital banking services in the event of a catastrophe. “Credit unions have always had a unique sense of community”, said Lewis, adding, “The movement has no trouble thinking globally and, at the same time, acting positively with neighborhood families to improve their financial well-being.”
Following Lewis’ initiative, 25 credit union leaders from the Maryland/DC area joined the ground breaking information-sharing sessions and pledged their commitment to organize and support business continuity efforts among all credit unions.
“Unprecedented collaboration and sharing of information among credit union leaders and government experts!” said Robin Remines, Chair, CUBCP Think Tank and Vice President, Information Technology, APGFCU. “The credit union movement provides the baseline for collaboration of business continuity and recovery efforts unknown in many other industries. Yet, it is the deliberate application of credit union philosophy when developing strategic plans that makes us leaders during these economically unstable times”
The CUBCP Think Tank was formed in 2007 by a group of credit union leaders to address the issues associated with business continuity, pandemic preparedness, and disaster recovery planning among credit unions.
Propelled by the success of this event, the CUBCP Think Tank plans to organize similar events at credit unions throughout the area to assist them with their strategic business continuity efforts.
