APGFCU Hosts Local Women’s Conference Providing New Perspective on Financial Health and Success

Women’s Conference

(Aberdeen, November 28, 2008) — Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union [APGFCU] proudly hosted its 2008 Women’s Conference at the Richlin Ballroom in Edgewood, on Saturday, November 15, its largest free women’s conference to date.  Attracting over 70 attendees, the conference was a unique and interactive learning experience providing leading-edge information on matters critical to the financial success and security of today’s woman.

The free, four-hour event began at 8 a.m. with light refreshments and special gifts for guests.  The conference’s theme, “Step Confidently Into Your Financial Future“ featured three nationally-known and well-respected speakers: Peggy Cecchine, a Financial Adviser with Edward Jones; Sonya Smith Valentine, Esquire, owner of Valentine Legal Group, LLC; and, Chris Sopa, founder of Chris Sopa International, Inc., a company dedicated to inspiring human potential, self-leadership and self-worth.

Peggy Cecchine delivered the welcome address, offering ways women can protect their financial futures, and what they should know about wills, insurance, retirement plans and credit. Sonya Smith-Valentine, “The Credit Doctor,” discussed consumer credit and the laws that are designed to protect consumers.  The last speaker, Chris Sopa, inspired guests with advice on how to tap into their own personal power and achieve their best life success.

Tina Mike, Education Director at APGFCU, stated “Research shows that women today have the majority of the responsibility for making the economic and financial decisions that impact their own families.  Yet, a large percentage of these women lack skills training in financial literacy that allow them to make the best financial choices.  Hosting this event is consistent with our mission to provide solid financial education to our local communities.”

The 2008 Women’s Conference grew from a similar event for women last year that attracted 50 guests, and plans are underway for a third conference in 2009.

Aligned with APGFCU’s strategic focus to provide financial literacy education to segments of underserved populations, the educational conference successfully demonstrated the credit union mission of, “People Helping People.”
