APGFCU Community Activism

(Aberdeen MD, December 4, 2007) — APGFCU continued its commitment to community involvement and education by hosting three free events in October to benefit credit union members and open to the general public.  The free events included a seminar on Personal Security Awareness, a shredding truck at branches, and free health screenings administered by the Upper Chesapeake Medical Mobile Van.

As part of APGFCU’s Personal Security Awareness Month, they presented a free seminar to members that covered a review of current scams, the warning signs of suspicious activity, and solutions to help protect sensitive information.  Over a dozen members attended and learned how to avoid becoming a victim.  APGFCU’s web site, www.APGFCU.com, offers additional advice and online resources.

On Saturday, October 20th, APGFCU partnered with Shred-It Baltimore to host a shredding event at the Aberdeen, Edgewood, Elkton and Laurel Bush branches, attracting over 200 members. Part of APGFCU’s Personal Security Awareness Month, the event was designed to provide a fun and fast means for members to dispose of sensitive information.  Members could also win one of four automatic cross-cut paper shredders.  Regularly shredding personal records decreases the chance of having personal information stolen by “dumpster divers” and burglars and is an effective way to safeguard personal financial information while recycling paper.  Shred-it Baltimore estimates that over the course of five years, APGFCU has saved over 800 trees by shredding and recycling paper.

Demonstrating the foundation of the cooperative, APGFCU hosted the Upper Chesapeake Mobile Medical Van at its Edgewood and Aberdeen branches.  The medical van’s services allowed members to choose from a variety of free health screenings including body fat analysis, blood pressure, cholesterol, and osteoporosis checks.  In addition to saving members money, the free medical screenings provided convenient access for members who were already visiting the branch.  For more information on Upper Chesapeake’s Mobile Medical Van, contact Healthlink at 800-515-0044.

“One of the principal tenets of the credit union movement is ‘People Helping People.’ APGFCU is always looking for ways to further this philosophy.  Our community outreach programs are designed to foster civic engagement by creating awareness, providing helpful advice, and creating healthy communities.  We are proud to open up our branches to these efforts now and in the years to come,” stated Don Lewis, President/CEO of APGFCU. APGFCU is committed to building strong families for a stronger community with eight branches in Harford and Cecil Counties and plans to open a new branch in Forest Hill in early 2008.  For more information, please visit www.APGFCU.com or call 1-800-225-2555 to speak with a member service representative.
